TESCO Reclaims the League Championship Title
TESCO finished the regular season with a 16-4 mark to capture the regular season title en route to a playoff sweep of the Bison and ultimately a victory over Butera's Towing in the finals to capture the Championship Title. The Blue and Gray edged Butera's Towing by a head to head advantage in the regular season and then met again in a five game dogfight to determine the league championship. The victory marks the fifth title for the seventeen year vets. TESCO's Brian King was named the league's Most Valuable Player.
Butera's Towing authored another sucessful campaign with a 16-4 mark to secrue second place in the regular season standings and a first round playoff bye. Butera's knocked off a tough Harrington Squad to advance to the finals, but fell to TESCO three games to two. The third year squad sent eight men to the All-Star game including head coach Sam Bardo, and four men were voted onto the All-Glenwood Squad. Despite the long ride from Jamestown for every game, Butera's has carved 44-14 record, three second place finishes and was twice the Championship runners-up.
The longest running sponsorship in the circuit, Harrington Industrial Laundry, posted a 15-5 regular season record and fixed the Thundercats in the wild-card round before falling to Butera's Towing in the payoffs. The former five time champions sent six men to the All-Star game including Home run derby winner Josh Dziomba. Dave Gnacinski won the Batting Title for the laundrymen with a .528 mark.
2008 Champions, The Bison, fell short in their title defense despite a 13-7 regular season mark. The herd defeated Miller's/Merrill Lynch in the Wild Card Round, but fell to TESCO in the Playoff Series. Geoff Flowers was voted the league's Rookie of the Year for his terrific job setting the plate for the Bison all season. Millers/Merrill Lynch also earned a 13-7 regular season mark and earned a second post season trip. Each squad sent 4 individuals to the All-Glenwood team.
The Thundercats roared to a 10-10 regular season finish but could not field a squad for the wild-card round and forfieted to Harrington. The first year squad edged Amark/Krauza, also with a 10-10 regular season mark, by a head to head victory advantage. Amark/Krauza, also a rookie squad, was in the running all though June, but faded as the season wore on.
Nagy's Tree Farm finished thier seventh season with an 8-12 mark, and for the first time since they entered the GBL circuit in 2003, the Bulls failed to reach the post-season. Right handed hurler Travis Butcher earned the Ed Smrekar Award with his 94 K season, the new GBL record. Veteren squad Knox Law posted a 6-14 mark despite winning some major upsets in July.
Creative Imprints managed 2 more wins than they earned 2008 with a 2-18 mark, and The Indians ruled the cellar with a 1-19 record.
